Stockton Avenue Bridge Debris Mitigation | Capitola, CA
The Stockton Avenue Bridge is a 1934 Art Deco landmark spanning Soquel Creek at the edge of Capitola’s downtown and beachfront district. Changes to upstream debris management have increased the volume of debris reaching the bridge, making it a critical at-risk structure during storm events.
CSWST2 was retained by the City of Capitola to conduct a feasibility study evaluating debris mitigation strategies at this highly constrained and visible location. The team analyzed multiple countermeasure alternatives, including potential bridge replacement, and prepared design schematics, cost analysis, and implementation considerations. Hydraulic modeling and coordination with geological and biological specialists informed the evaluation of permitting and environmental constraints.
The study provides the City with a clear framework for protecting a vital transportation link while balancing historic preservation, flood risk reduction, and community access to the waterfront.
