Petaluma North SMART Station | Petaluma, CA
CSWST2 supported Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) and the City of Petaluma with the planning and design of the Petaluma North Station, a new regional rail stop that expands transit access for North Petaluma and strengthens connections to the broader SMART rail network.
Located adjacent to an active rail corridor, the project required careful coordination and innovative engineering to integrate new station infrastructure without disrupting ongoing rail operations. CSWST2 led the civil and rail design for the station platform, plaza, and parking areas, developing solutions that balanced operational safety, constructability, and user experience within a constrained site.
A key feature of the project was the design of a gauntlet track, allowing trains to shift laterally as they approach the station while maintaining uninterrupted service. CSWST2 also updated pedestrian and bicycle grade crossings and coordinated improvements to adjacent pathway segments to ensure safe, seamless connections between the station and surrounding trail networks. The project navigated environmental constraints, including nearby wetlands and residential development, through coordinated design and stakeholder collaboration.
The Petaluma North Station now serves as an important transit hub, improving regional rail access while enhancing pedestrian and bicycle connectivity. The project demonstrates CSWST2’s ability to deliver complex rail-adjacent infrastructure that supports multimodal mobility and long-term community connectivity.
