After 40 years of supporting California’s infrastructure development, Al Cornwell to retire from CSW|ST2

CSW|ST2 announced today that after nearly four decades of leading the firm, Al Cornwell will retire at the end of 2020.  Robert Stevens, who took over leadership in January 2019, will continue as the third President in the firm’s 54 year history.

Al has served as CSW|ST2’s President since the mid 1980’s before stepping down last year in order to support incoming President, Robert Stevens. During his time as President, Al oversaw the 1990 merger between CSW Consultants and long-time Novato stalwarts Stuber-Stroeh Engineering that ultimately became CSW/Stuber-Stroeh Engineering Group. His leadership skills and resiliency helped him guide the firm through the economic challenges of the early 1990’s and 2000’s as well as the Great Recession of 2009.

Al contributed significantly to local projects like the Sears Point Raceway expansion, building the Buck Center for Research, completing the Master Plan for the UCSF Mission Bay Campus, and repurposing the former Hamilton Army Airfield into a mixed-use community. Under his leadership, the firm expanded to all parts of the Bay Area, and extended its educational portfolio to most of the community colleges that surround the Bay.

“I have been very fortunate to work with a fantastic group of people for many years. These include my colleagues at CSW|ST2, our superb clients as well as the dedicated civil servants and elected officials for all these years.” said Al. “The team at CSW|ST2 is amazing and under Robert Stevens, our new president, it’s continuing to broaden the firm’s horizons and respond to the evolving needs of our communities, providing for complete streets and multi- use trails, as well as much needed housing and other infrastructure. While the decision was anticipated, it did not come easily. I hope to continue to be involved with the projects in which I have invested many years, but it is time to let others grow and serve the community with our services and for me to begin a new chapter and find other ways to be participate in the special community where we are so fortunate to live.”

When Robert first met Al in the summer of 2017, he immediately knew he wanted to be part of the team. “In my 25 years working in the industry, I have never met a more caring and genuine individual dedicated to providing clients with the highest quality of service and committed to the success of his employees. He built a strong team and is leaving a solid foundation to help us continue to succeed.”

We can’t thank Al enough for everything he’s created, but we can continue his legacy of excellence in engineering and client support through the next generation of engineers following in his footsteps.
