This new two story building sits atop fill desposits overlying bay mud and is supported on piles driven 50 feet to refusal. The two story atruim at the main entrance to the building is covered by a 12 sided skylight. We devised a central column support for the skylight that also supports the three stair segments leading to the second story; which are cantilevered off this central column. The large pipe column also serves as a tension/compression ring which transmits exterior wind and seismic forces through radial members to the roof diaphragm beyond the atrium.
